The Young Masters certificates will be handed out

The CEI/GEYC 2002 in Turin is the second convention in a long chain of conventions to come. The e-learning course (distance education) was offered to the participating students a year ahead of the face-to-face meeting. The first idea to arrange this kind of distance education connected to a convention for youth age 14-18 was created in Lund, Sweden at the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE). The idea was developed in co-operation with the Swedish branch of Caretakers, CEI/SE. The concept of Preventative Environmental Strategies was presented in the Young Masters course, which was designed, delivered and conducted by CEI/SE and IIIEE.

Tomorrow, 4 July 2002, Birgitta Nordén, who is responsible for the Young Masters e-learning course, will hand out the certificates to the Young Masters who have been actively participating in the web-based course “Prevention is better than cure”.

This - the second GEYC - was organized and hosted in
corporation with CEI, today very familiar and well
experienced with this kind of conferences. The IIIEE at
Lund University commits, because of the broad interest
rom several countries and cities, to change this biannual event to be transformed into an annual one. Until now, an application from Alexandria, Egypt, has been received to host the convention year 2003 or 2004.

“We have also been discussing with the city of Barcelona and Molde (Norway 2006). Informal expressions of interest conveyed by partners in Beijing to be appointed to host the convention year 2008.

We also would appreciate a continuation of our co-operation with the Caretakers”, Prof. and Director Thomas B Johansson, and Administrative Director Carl Foung, IIIEE, declare.

Youth Expecting Government Support

China, Vietnam, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, together with Sweden and the USA, although with different backgrounds, seem to have a common issue – the lack of government support and the lack of investments for sustainable future.

Chinese delegation presented the state of transportation system in the cities and the further development of legislations on emission measurement.

Indian delegation proposed, among other things a plan
on how to help the farmers learn about ICT. The Indonesian delegation presented their transportation system and also their vision for sustainable mobility. The delegation from the USA introduced videoconferencing as a tool for distance education, for example they had a videoconference with students in Paris and practiced their French language skills and Swedes were presenting some ways how to make their town more bicycle-friendly.

After the project presentations, all participants agreed that the young people should be allowed to participate in decision-making processes on ICT and Sustainable Mobility in their communities.
